Hi,
This is soooo close to exactly what is needed. It is lightweight, simple, easy to implement, it really checks almost all the boxes. I just need to be be able to collect a little more information from the volunteer. I my case I want to register volunteers for an amateur radio event, and need to collect call signs. But could be anything, a particular teacher, or classroom number, etc.

That’s not really a “work around”, that’s what that field was designed for, to allow you to collect extra information.
If I ever decide to rewrite the plugin as a much better “pro” version, the ability to define custom fields is certainly on the list. But, not sure if that will ever happen, as discussed here:

We have found it OK to ask for volunteers to respond to a couple questions. The main issue is that the same box appears for all sign up forms. In my modification, the textbox looks like the lines below, and the prompt needs to tell them what to enter on each line. There is no validation that they have filled out each line, but it works for us. See my post under the thread ‘Multiple details fields for a task’.
